After deciding not to launch any album through the recording label, she signed with Epic Records at age seventeen.However this also could not help her launch as singer.Ashanti was born on October 13, 1980, on Long Island, New York.After an introduction to show business in 1980s and '90s via appearances in television commercials and music videos, Ashanti made her recording debut as a featured artist on Big Pun's song "How We Roll" in 2001.Ashanti's mother, who enrolled her in various forms of dance classes, including tap, jazz and ballet, nurtured her gift of dance from a young age.
In the year 2003, she collaborated with Lid Rock as well as San Francisco-based FVPF in order to create awareness regarding the matter of domestic violence in National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
For the album, she garnered a Grammy Award, 8 Billboard Awards, the Soul Train Aretha Franklin Award for “Entertainer of the Year” and 2 American Music Awards.
The following year, she released her followed up studio album “Chapter II”.
She as well helped in rising fund for sickle cell research, Southeast Asia tsunami disaster and the Hurricane Katrina victims.
She is actively assisting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
